The Kawasaki City Museum is a multi-media cultural complex, consisting of both museum and art gallery, that is situated amidst the greenery and water of the Todoroki Ryokuchi Park, a place where the citizens of Kawasaki City can relax and enjoy nature, culture and sport.
Since opening in 1988, its activities have been carried out around the central theme of ‘The City and the People’, tracing the diverse aspects of the development of Kawasaki City through displays of archeology, history, folklore and art. One of its unique characteristics is that it collects and shows various media, such as posters, photographs, cartoons, movies, videos, etc., that are generally overlooked by museums, demonstrating the roles these have played in the development of the urban culture and resulting in it becoming popular not only among the local residents, but also with people from all over.
In addition to permanent and special exhibitions based on the museum’s central theme, it is also active in a variety of fields, presenting regular showings of nostalgic or rare movies, concerts and performances, as well as lectures and workshops on numerous subjects. Furthermore, in order to contribute to the cultural activities of the local people, we provide rental gallery space, seminar rooms and other facilities.
Apart from providing a place where the local people and others can experience the diversity of culture, make new discoveries, enjoy themselves and interact with like-minded people, the City Museum wishes to work with them to improve our facilities even further. I and the entire staff are working actively towards this end and we look forward to seeing you at the museum soon.
